tobermory's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Those other people I wish I could be one of the gazelle people. You know who they are the ones who speed past you on the track or running path effortlessly, or who can crank up the speed on the treadmill and barely break a sweat their feet a blur of perfectly measured, long strides. Almost uniformly they are tall and thin these are the people who never have to think twice about going out for a cheeseburger and fries or ordering the creamy dessert after dinner. There is a Gazelle Man in my Boot Camp class and its even more galling because I think hes 47 and he kicks all of our asses - even the people I consider to be the Good Runners. It must be so nice to, as Nike says, just do it. To go out and not be a sweaty, red-faced, heaving mass at the end of even a short run. To not worry that the extra slice of pizza might as well be stapled directly to your derriere because thats where its going to wind up anyway. I think its easier to just do it when, for you, it is easier in general. Although, maybe there is something character building in struggling through a 5K and managing not to walk even when sometime after the 2 mile marker you see someone walking and think how nice it would be to just take a little break and you dont take that break because you know it will derail your whole race plan (plan = not walking) and then youll be embarrassed to post your race time on your silly little blog on Monday. Maybe this character building factor is something that the Gazelle People will never be able to understand. Maybe for them running is just the easy way to get in their daily exercise and because they never struggle they cant achieve the sense of accomplishment that comes from a particularly grueling workout. Whatever sometimes (maybe even most times) Id happily trade in the sense of accomplishment for the chance to run like a gazelle for a day just to see how it really is on the other side of the fence.
